Setoguro means black seto in Japanese. It refers to a type of ware made during the Momoyama period (1573-1615). This black glaze was used to gauge the temperature inside the kiln, bowls where pulled at high temperature and quickly cooled rendering this luscious black glaze. The examples that survive of this ware are mainly tea bowls. This glaze that is made up of wood ash, feldspars and iron, has intrigued me. Last year, Br. Iain and I worked on several recipes that we tested rigorously and came up with this one that I am very happy with. I am very grateful to Takao Okazaki and all of his advice. The Black Oribe refers to the brushwork in combination with the seto glaze.
